How to change name on Birth Certificate in India

Changing names in Indian Birth Certificate is an easy process and here we will explain you in detail about how to modify name in birth certificate. There are several reasons why one would want to change his/her name in the birth certificate/card, let we do not drag the discussion towards that context and stay limited with the procedure about how to change your name in existing birth certificate.

How to change name in Birth Certificate

As of now birth certificate name change is an offline process and there are very limited states which have started porting birth certificate related content to online clouds. So in order to change/rename your name in existing card, you will have to go through offline channels.

All you need to do is to visit nearest birth certificate office and ask for the concerned documents/forms. Once you have the birth certificate name change form do fill it completely, attach all the supported documents and submit it to the concerned officer.

Once your details are verified and authorities are convinced with your name change, your name will be changed in the birth certificate and you will be issued a new birth certificate carrying your changed name. You have the option to change other details as well (you can ask the concerned officer in the nearest birth certificate center to get more details about this context).

Documents required for Birth Certificate Name Change

You will require very basic documents to support your name change. These can be:

  • Newspaper cutting where you have given the name change advertisement
  • Written proof from local level bodies like Gram Panchayat or Municipality Office
While submitting the name change form, you will have to attach any of the above proof on basis of which the invigilator will validate and change your name in the existing certificate. Once your name is changed in the birth certificate, you can use it as base to get name changed in other documents like your mark sheets, ration card, passport, PAN card etc.

How many days will it take to get name change in Birth Certificate and processing fee

Once you submit the name change application (along with the supported documents), government invigilator will validate all your details and will approve your application on successful validation. In normal cases it takes around 7-10 working days to get name change in birth card.

In order to track status, you will need to get in touch with someone from ration card office. Be in regular touch with someone from the office itself and keep asking about your application status from time to time.

UPDATE:

As per Bombay High Court, biological father's name can't be removed/changed from original birth certificate without proper permissions from court. One would need to have court orders in order to replace name of biological father with the adoptive one. If the deed is done without valid orders, then they will have to face the consequences as per Indian laws.
